ANIBONE (Alfacalcidol) 0.5mcg Capsules

DRUG CATEGORY: Vitamin D analogue

MECHANISM OF ACTION: Alfacalcidol undergoes rapid hepatic conversion to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, which acts as a regulator of calcium and phosphate metabolism. The main effects are to increase circulating 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 levels, and thereby to increase intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate, promote bone mineralization, decrease plasma parathyroid hormone levels as well as to decrease bone resorption, with relief of bone and muscle pain. (PTH stimulates osteoclasts mediated bone resorption)

INDICATIONS: Osteoporosis, renal bone disease (Renal osteodystrophy), hypoparathyroidism, hyperparathyroidism (with bone disease), rickets and osteomalacia.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: The initial dosage is: Adults & Children above 20 Kg weight: 1 mcg daily Children under 20Kg body weight: 0.05mcg/kg/day. The dosage in osteoporosis is in range of 0.5 -1 mcg/day with or without calcium in treatment of osteoporosis.
